Gone are the days when we therapists could have a break in between Christmas and the New Year or the first week off in January, ho, ho, ho! So to get a rest I have booked three days at Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire in mid-January. There I will have self indulgence, just as I have been pampering all my clients.

It is really easy to convince myself to go to a health spa and of course it is all research for work. I may be able to pick up some tips for my own practice, only if I don’t get too sleepy and forget to write it all down.

My clients, of course, are the lucky ones – I shall return refreshed and invigorated to work even more effectively with them and help solve all their concerns. Roll on 2012.

Night-time testing

I have designed new packs to hold the lectric soda crystals (which are used for drawing off fluid) over smaller areas such as ankles and wrists as well as the usual knee/elbow joints and back. In addition, there is now a further option in the form of a square pack or 'pouch' without straps. This can be filled with crystals, placed over a swollen area and secured with whatever bandage or support is handy.

Last night, I decided to try out one of these on myself. I secured one over my knee with an elasticated bandage and went to bed. Four hours is the minimum time to work, overnight is best. I always recommend to lie on a towel when in bed as the pack can become quite damp as it draws fluid from the area. My knee did look slimmer this morning and I had a little giggle because there was not really any puffiness that I knew of around the area, but maybe this could be a new slimming aid?

I’m sure the sceptics will say it was the binding around the pack that held the skin in over night, but I can assure them it was not tight or bound around like the old ‘Kwik Slim’ beauty treatment – does anyone remember that? It was simply the crystals doing their best!

The Mighty Quads

I use the Bowen Technique with lots of runners and swimmers. Certain muscle groups are the power houses of the body: these are the galvanising gastrocnemius which defines the shape of the calf and the hamstrings at the back of the thigh propelling us forwards. The mighty quadriceps, namely the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and the satorius pick up the thighs and knees to move forward but also support the hips and pelvis.

The Bowen pelvic procedure also assists hurdlers with shin splints and gymnasts with landing on their feet correctly. In a similar fashion, anyone can develop these concerns even if they are not into sport, just life! A sprained ankle after stepping down a kerb, a strained back from gardening and even a ‘text neck’ or stiff neck from using a phone or iPad with the head bent forwards.

After the initial two or three treatments, a person may only need another session if the injury returns or the condition is ongoing as in the case of a torn muscle, a neurological issue or medical problem. In all cases exercise alternating with relaxation is encouraged in the client’s own time to allow for a successful outcome.

Information Technology (IT)

I’ve just had a big order go out to Austria and as we were sticking the German language labels on the Bowtech Ease bottles I was listening to Radio 4. There was an interesting talk from an IT expert on what the next internet phenomenon might be. This, he explained affected us all and was to do with ‘things.’ He called it the ‘Internet of things’ (IoT) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15004063

Yes, he actually used the word ‘things’ – I waited to hear more. He continued to say that tiny sensors, which were a radio-frequency identification device (RFID) could be attached to anything in order to provide information, location and feedback to us. Examples given were road surfaces that needed resealing and even the jeans you are wearing that could tweet back on where you were.

Part of me felt panic as I wondered suddenly if all of our own senses were going to be taken over by technology. What about being human in this world, can we not just sit with our feet up in the garden enjoying nature without worrying if the deckchair or sun-lounger we are on will report back to our internet when it is also defunct? But, then again, thankfully we still have choice whether to participate or not, or do we?

Note: The Austrian order did get completed and was picked up by a courier, all with human effort!

Price savers

We live in interesting times – just before 2008 it was spend, spend, spend - prices were higher than now and the shops were busy. Since then it is save, save, save for the customer and shops have reduced their profits to survive.

I have done my part – since 2009 I have lowered my treatment session prices as well as offering the option of shorter time slots. Before the credit crunch, many clients would regularly indulge in a whole hour’s worth of pampering, now it may be less often or just a half hour to work on a troublesome ache and pain somewhere.

On the internet shopping site, I have not put up my postal prices for two years, even though Royal Mail has done. I aim to offer special priced packages whenever I can and the latest one has another fortnight left… this is the reduced cost of Bowtech Crystals. It feels good to offer natural remedies with therapeutic benefits for both therapist and client use at home.

Introduction to the Bowen Technique

I’ve just finished presenting a four week course: ‘Introduction to the Bowen Technique’ at City Lit, Convent Garden and was delighted to read a testimonial from one of my students, who attended. See ‘Winter in Australia’ blog. This is my third course there and another full day workshop is being planned for October.

It is quite hard knowing what to include in a short course, when there are so many procedures for students to learn about the body. This is an amazing therapy and I can add my personal account of it because I work as a therapist and have done so in a variety of settings for almost 20 years.

The Bowtech Bowen Technique is taught in 30 countries around the world and there are just over 90 instructors. Total number of practitioners is just over 26,000 and growing. It is a worldwide qualification and for international students in London or anywhere this is an exciting prospect to be able to work and travel. The impression was that she only felt happiness in a drug induced world, which was of course only temporary, and did not have the strength to overcome her feelings and illness to live in the outside world.

I also think that coming up to the age of 30 is a milestone for some people. It’s like a hill on the horizon where you cannot see the other side. Feelings of leaving the experimental fun 20s and moving into the older 30s can be daunting. Coupled with all the ‘shoulds’ and ‘should nots’ was this what Amy was experiencing?

I’m sure many of us will stop to think about the meaning of life especially in this extraordinary week of fatalities. Does it make each day important? I think so. Living in the present and doing the best we can for ourselves and for others has to be a good affirmation of living.

Winter in Australia

I’ve just returned from Australia. The weather was similar to here, but actually cooler in the evenings and it being their winter I took my wool wrap and Ugg boots. They don’t do central heating but most places have air con systems that reverse air which is thankfully hot. In other places, there were no heaters and I wore my wrap in bed.

I was reminded of my college days when I didn’t have enough money for the meter to keep the flat warm and we used cling film (it’s called 'Glad Wrap' in Oz) over the windows to keep out the draughts. Also we didn’t need a fridge either as our milk used to freeze on the table!

Thankfully most days in the north of Australia are around 25 degrees, so I soon warmed up. There is generally a lot of interest in Bowtech Supplies and seeing that the exchange rate is good for export we are setting up a shopping page - so look out for the Aussie flag in the shopping area soon.

Healing with Sound

I presented a class recently at the City Literary College (www.citylit.ac.uk) in London called ‘Healing with Sound’ where students were able to explore using their voices to help themselves and others. When the voice is used in long tones or toning, the body becomes an instrument and vibrates with sound.

A great way to demonstrate this is to place the hands on the chest just below the collar bones and find a note that is neither too high nor too low, but somewhere in the middle. When the correct sound is found, a vibration is felt in the chest cavity.

We should not underestimate every day sounds. They all affect our body from the road workers with jack hammers, the hum of traffic or those that lift our spirits – singing in a choir, humming to a favourite song on the radio or the sound of the wings of swans flying overhead.

Take a moment to listen – and to hear.

Scottish Beauty Buzz!

I’ve just returned from Scottish Beauty in Edinburgh. The answer may be a shocking no! Why? When we always tell our clients how important it is for their health and well being to have regular treatments. I was one of those therapists many years ago – perhaps I did not find it necessary and the odd one was just a treat. These days I usually have one complementary therapy every month - Bowen therapy of course, no surprise there!

When I am feeling stressed or have a strained muscle for example, then I have weekly sessions just as I recommend to my own clients. I like to arrange an exchange with another therapist for the reasons above and beforehand we can have a natter about how business is progressing. We don’t chat afterwards because generally we are too relaxed!

Those of you who know about the Bowen technique will know that after 10 days or more, a different therapy can be applied, but not at the same time. I think this is probably true of a lot of therapies as how can you tell what is working if you jumble them all up. In this instance, after the designated time has elapsed from the Bowen session, I do like a massage or shiatsu and had one last week… heaven!

Grumpy travelling

Rather than drive to attend a training module, I decided to take the train. I’ve become used to having my own private world in a car – radio, music or silence, and stopping where I wish. With soaring prices at the pump, it seemed the sensible option to go by rail.

Armed with my book and laptop, I settled down to read and study. I had forgotten about my fellow passengers each with their own agenda. I had to endure noisy iPods or conversations on mobile phones. Do people like to hear their own voice? And why are they raised… is it to highlight their own importance and ensure the whole carriage gets the message that they are well deserving?

At my hotel I was woken at 3am by screaming and laugher from nightclub revellers. Clip clopping overhead in high heels, the lift seemingly going up and down all night long was another blow to consideration for others. Perhaps carpet might be the answer?

Returned home in the quiet coach and guess what? One man kept pacing out of the carriage every 10 minutes to talk loudly on his mobile in the vestibule as, gosh, he had forgotten where he was sitting and it was vital that he take the call. Not to mention the other people who had forgotten to switch their ringing or texting tones to silence. Have we forgotten that quietness and stillness has its place too?

Body Balance

‘Balance’ has become a new buzz word, used by many of us when we are not feeling very well or on top of the world. It is also used as jargon or a saying among those in the work place who get stressed when their work/life balance is not going so well.

When clients come to see me with a painful shoulder or lower back pain for example, I often hear them say they do not feel in balance. I always listen because in addition to the client sharing their emotional feelings – these are vital clues as to how the body is coping.

I often think we grow our body shape depending upon what has happened to us, from our jobs to caring for family or ourselves. I know that after using the basic relaxation moves in the Bowen technique, equilibrium is often restored – working on muscles and fascia can realign and remind the body of where its balance lies. It may only be temporary or longer lasting. Sometimes the change is permanent.

Swollen knees

Lots of sporting injuries result in swelling around the knee. Athletes such as sprinters, marathon runners and rugby and football players are particularly prone, while anyone suffering a strain or a twisted knee from tennis, for example, can present with oedema in the soft tissue. Help is available by using one of our applicators with Bowtech crystals.

The blue applicator with pockets on the side to hold the crystals has been improved by more practical and durable fabric that can be machine washed. Some of my rugby players will be pleased, I’m sure, no messing around with hand washing.

The applicators have been out of stock and having found a wonderful new seamstress, they will be back online this weekend. We are so enthused that we’ve added an alternative option, a patterned applicator not just for sports people, but for arthritic and painful knees that would like a prettier look. Take a peek at the photograph.

Bowtech Applicators for swollen knees (or elbows) – choose your colour preference

Time Out

I have just returned from Ragdale Hall www.ragdalehall.co.uk where I succumbed to quietness and relaxation. This is nurturing for the mind as one can either meditate on the restful visions or in turn feel stimulated. One of the pictures was imaginary space or an ‘other world’ concept, perhaps taking us out of the confines of a humdrum life… I would definitely recommend Ragdale Hall for time out.

Fatigue and joint pain

Working with clients who have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or any other condition where the physical body is tired and in pain? The Bowen technique could be the answer. It is so gentle, no pressure on the skin, no hard manipulation – just simply absorbing the therapy into the body, waiting five minutes or more between each set of moves and then waiting a week or more between sessions.

I always start with the lower body moves and may only carry out four moves on the first session. This may be repeated on the second session and on the third I may be able to do another further two moves. The client may or may not respond and it might take a course until small changes are apparent, such as better sleep or less ache in a certain joint.

In my own experience, I have found not treating the shoulder blades until after three months greatly increases the chance of improvement in these conditions. It may simply be this is the area of most tension or because there is so much need to use the arms in everyday life – they are like the powerhouse of the body and not surprisingly, in constant use. Hail to the Bowen technique…

Busy practice

I was very busy with clients in between Christmas and New Year. The solution is Bowtech Ease. The small bottle (25ml) has an integral dropper pipette, just squeeze a few drops into the palm of your hand and then smooth around your toes. Stretch your toes and press in the oil. It only takes about three minutes each foot and also warms them up. If you’re at work, you can apply and press the oil through tights or stockings. The area becomes dry afterwards so you are not going to get in a sticky mess!

For those people that love reflexology or foot massage, simply take a bottle with you and ask the therapist to apply it as part of the treatment on your feet. Better still, if you have a foot spa, use Bowtech Crystals first.

You can also put on a pair of bed socks to help keep your feet toasty, or be in fashion with Uggs. They are brilliant at what they do, my mum adds them to her bath after a day’s gardening to ease aches and pains especially at this time of the year – lots of bending and twisting to rake-up the leaves.

I find that having a bath with the crystals after swimming helps get rid of the chlorine smell and soften the skin. The crystals are also thought to have a detoxifying effect which may help, especially after sport, to keep the muscles relaxed, preventing cramp or spasms.

The crystals can also be used as part of a beautifying treatment in a salon or clinic with a pedicure or chiropody, as well as DIY treatments at home. Big baths to wallow in or hand and foot soaks are all warm and comforting as the weather becomes colder - then soften skin further with B-Line creams and oils available through our special offer to the end of January – coming this week, enjoy.

Complementary Therapy

Variety is the spice of life, so they say! Certainly in terms of clients I have a wide variety, some come along for one or two sessions, never to be seen again and others have a regular maintenance treatment every fortnight or even monthly. I even have a couple who come along every six months or so for a check-up, a bit like an MOT! I’m a firm believer that once a person feels they are better from Bowen or another complementary therapy, then they either no longer require any help or they can just telephone when the need arises.

It is just the same with my online shop. I have customers that feel better from using one or two products and recommend me to their friends while professional therapists buy regularly for their own clientele.

I do like a chat when my client first arrives. This helps to set the scene by letting me know how they have coped and felt from the last session and any current aches and pains. It is important that I address those areas, but also to apply other moves that may assist directly or indirectly. I still remember a man who had a terrible shoulder problem that seemed not to improve despite several sessions on the neck and shoulder area. I then worked on the pelvis only to be told a week later that his original pain had gone – phew.

Complementary medicine has now become more widely accepted. I enjoy training and being involved in the group dynamics: it will assist me in learning how the course is structured and what I can add with my own teaching style. The course is worldwide and taught the same high standards throughout; see: www.bowtech.com

Re-doing the beginners’ modules again, I would recommend as continuing professional development (CPD) for all therapists to undertake at any time. It is astonishing how rewarding it is to go back over procedures you thought you knew, only to be corrected and reminded of where your hands should be to carry out a movement over fascia or muscle. I’m just starting to get adjusted to being practiced on and taking notes to teach – after the first two modules, I felt rather overwhelmed and tired in mind and body. After this last module, which is number three - I have decided to do it again and will return to Nicola Hok’s Hampshire course in Liss, because secretly I did enjoy it.

Stock take

Looking after my own practice, I carry out a stock-take regularly to maintain a level of minimal items. There is no way I want to be caught out if a large order came in and I was unable to fulfil it and it was delayed. I buy my bottles in bulk from Mike Spencer PA Aromatherapy http://www.paaromatherapy.co.uk/ and often buy their luxury aromatherapy oils or candles – I am always telling my clients to treat themselves and I try to practice what I preach. When I need practical equipment for my treatment room such as bedrolls, towels, cotton pads etc I buy from a local hair and beauty supplier that I have known for over 20 years http://www.idealhairandbeauty.com/

I do like to use local services and I feel it’s so important to share our money around – helping and recommending one another helps everyone’s business to grow. In the same spirit I like to use the local post office – I walk down if I can with a big bag of parcels or call upon the courier http://www.fastwaycouriers.co.uk/ for larger items. I take time to chat to people on the way if I can. I enjoy life and try not to rush about and get stressed out! I think I sound a bit like Sally Hawkins in the film ‘Happy Go Lucky’ - did anyone else see that? Her character is a thoroughly nice person!

'Your Intuitive Self'

I AM running an evening course called ‘Your intuitive Self.’ It’s all about knowing how we each use intuition and how to practice it through exercises in class and at home. The course runs for six weeks and we are mid-way. We’ve also discussed personal boundaries and how we can sense or have an awareness of our own and others’, especially when we meet new people. Being quiet and present is a big part of it and I read with interest in the Daily Telegraph on Monday (October 4th) about Dan Howard and his technique called ‘Intentional Resting’ see www.intentionalresting.com Wow, this really clicked for me as I have been teaching the same thing to clients and students for years as well as applying it myself. It’s kind of self indulgent, but, hey why not!

The next three classes are about listening to your intuition, finding out if you have spirit guides or guardian angels and using your hands to heal. I’m planning a day workshop, although weekly classes mean there is time to absorb some of the principles and try them out. It’s an exciting moment when you discover someone else is on your wavelength and you can find a website or a class to join. I am going to explain this one-day workshop more on my other website www.helenperkins.com as it has a similar theme to the course I already present which is called ‘Intuition and Sound Reflexology.’

Do come along – the more the merrier!

Healthy body

As a registered Bowen therapist, I have to complete 16 hours of continued professional development (CPD) every year. This used to be left to the last minute, when I would hurriedly search around for an appropriate course. Not so now, when there are some very interesting courses available. In July, I attended the Special Bowen Procedures Part 2 (SBP 2) see http://www.bowen-technique.co.uk/ and discovered some amazing Bowen to help more people. I don’t always need these special moves because the basic work helps 85% of most cases.

One area often neglected in body work is the digestive system. This is strange when you think about it, because what we put into our mouths (healthy or not so healthy) helps function and provides the energy so vital to overall wellbeing. The SBP2 does teach moves to aide digestion and I carried out one of these procedures this week on an MS client, who immediately began experiencing tingling in her legs when usually she has little feeling there, incredible. After the sensations had subsided and the session was finished, she was able to walk more easily out of the clinic, without her stick and feeling better.

Today the Riverford van http://www.riverford.co.uk/) arrived with my organic fruit and vegetable box. I never know what produce is going to be delivered: this is such fun as I know it will be flavoursome and there will be a lift of energy straight after eating it. Always at this time of the year, it is only a matter of a few weeks when sandals will have to be replaced with boots and coats will have to be worn over wraps and layers. It is also a time when I look at my wardrobe for a cull and decide what colour I want to wear for winter. I had my season and style revealed for me a few years ago by a consultant with the House of Colour www.houseofcolour.co.uk I discovered I was an autumn – not surprising as I do love this time of the year in my garden, raking up all the colourful leaves and tidying it up for the long dormant months ahead.

The fashion is great again I feel, with the return of dresses – so feminine. I’m not so keen about the high heels and I have had a few casualties where clients have literally ‘fallen off’ their heels. Twisted ankles, stubbed toes and plantar fasciitis which is torn fascia on the sole of the foot – very painful and all taking quite a few months to get better, especially if the person re-offends!

I wonder if I am turning into an old wise granny before my time when I look at the flat pumps worn by the youngsters, thinking of the lack of support their shoes are giving them or the fact that they may already have an uneven gait from hip imbalances creating pronation of the feet, fallen arches, and heel spurs. Similarly, the posture of the top heavy chest that hovers over the high heels to balance and prevent topple. I sigh and hand out sachets of Bowtech crystals - so soothing for aching and swollen feet - leaflets about the Bowen Technique www.bowtech.com that I offer to help correct their alignment – the website address of my cousin in the USA www.watkinsfootcentre.com who explains about these podiatry terms – and I rarely mention the platform shoes I used to wear…

Helping ourselves

I do answer a lot of telephone calls about Bowtech products. I enjoy chatting to people from all over the country that want to help themselves or others. Most people just want to find a simple remedy that can be applied easily, taken as a supplement or used as part of their daily routine. That is exactly what I can supply.

One lovely call today came from a man who bought a 10ml rollerball of Bowtech Ease from me last week. He had broken his wrist a few years ago, but it had healed unevenly and was often painful. He found it hard to accept that just by rubbing on the ointment would provide relief. Of course, I emphasised the ointment should be gently pressed in rather than rubbed. As a reflexologist I am a firm believer this may help to break down congestion and calcification. I have worked with Bowtech Ease using foot reflexology with many people over the years where regular treatment has helped even out hard skin, mis-shapen bones and gritty reflex areas.

In the Daily Mail newspaper last week (September 23rd), it was reported that Dr Marjolein Kammers of University College London had carried out a study about pain relief and the sense of touch individuals use in order to help themselves. She said: “Pain isn’t just the signals coming from the body to the brain, but it is also the way the brain processes those signals.” This seems to support all the self-help measures we know so instinctively and why many of us seek out remedies often online or through word of mouth to help ourselves. Keep these old fashioned remedies I say!

Working late

People often ask me what creams are good for the feet. The answer lies with B-line’s incredible ‘Feet Treat.’ http://www.bodyspatreats.co.uk/ This is a rich balm that I use at night after my bath. I massage it into my feet and then pop on a pair of cotton bed socks to further encourage the cream to reach my epidermal skin layers rather than my satin bed sheets.

I feel it must be a common theme: we sole traders that have our own businesses, working into the night to catch up on emails and other enquires that need answering. The day might have involved seeing clients, some hurried shopping around the lunch break, but always ending up in the office. And why is it, at the beginning of a fresh new month that all the bills come in? I seem to spend copious amounts on membership and insurance for my business, do I really need it and what benefits are there for me?

Not wanting to end this grumbling, but not wishing it on those reading this, I will make myself a cup of green tea and retire. Goodnight!

First impressions

This is my first blog date and I’m eager to give a good impression. My marketing consultant says the only impression is the first one – which is true, but fatal if you are not prepared. How many times have I forgotten to put lipstick on for some colour and glam, only to bump into a client in the street. Oh dear, even worse if they want to introduce me to their friend who could be a future client. I just smile and hope that my wonderful personality shines through.

It’s the beer festival this week in Peterborough, many people are smiling after only one half pint of real ale or perry. Are we in for another rainy night wearing all sorts of boots and wellies?

As it’s the run up to the busy holiday weekend, I’m just packing up last minute orders for Bowtech Supplies. If I can get them all posted today, then most people will be able to start using their ointment on their bunions (Bowtech Ease) tomorrow or help give them selves a boost to their morale and tiredness by using Bowtech Formula. I think I might need some of those too, at the end of my day!
